Here we report an economy, scalable and environmentally friendly technique to prepare the novel nanocomposite of PS and PMMA with graphene nano-sheet via a water-in-oil type Pickering emulsions stabilized by overlapping pristine graphene nona-sheets. The first step of our approach utilizes the insolubility of graphene/graphite in both water and organic monomer and so does not require oxidation, reduction, surfactants, high boiling solvents, chemical functionalization, or the input of large amounts of mechanical energy or heat. The key technique is the colloid properties of the graphene nanosheet/graphite, i.e. the strong attraction of graphene nano-sheet to high-energy oil and water interfaces. This allows for the creation of stable water-in-oil Pickering emulsions with controlled droplet size and overlapping graphene sheets playing the role of surfactant by covering the droplet surface and stabilizing the interfaces with a thin graphitic skin. During the process, the cheap graphite exfoliation to 3 to 10 layers to stabilized the water-in-oil Pickering emulsions. The oil monomer styrene and methyl methacrylate were polymerized 500 minutes at 70 C after adding the initiator AIBN to the Pickering emulsions. The formed novel nanocomposite of PS and PMMA with graphene nano-sheet shows excellent thermal stability, high Tg and high thermal conductivity.
