演讲嘉宾-徐志平

徐志平
清华大学 教授

Prof. Zhiping Xu has done his Ph.D. in Engineering Mechanics (09/2002 ~ 07/2007) from Department of Engineering Mechanics, School of Aerospace Tsinghua University, Beijing, China and has received his post-doctoral (associate) degree from the university of Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He has more than 50 publications on Graphene and related research. His research interest is mainly related to Network materials, their fundamental properties of building blocks, interfaces, topology, (self-) assembly and applications in energy and environmental research;and Nano-scale fluid-structure interactions, with applications in biological and bio-inspired materials, nano-mechanical devices for energy and sensory application.

演讲题目:Defects in Graphene: Their Topology, Geometry and Roles in Material Design

内容摘要

Defects in solids commonly limit the material performance by acting as weak points under external loads or perturbations to propagating waves. However, here we will discuss the roles of defects in graphene, or in general two-dimensional (2D) crystals, from a constructive viewpoint. We will show the topological and geometrical aspects of defects in graphene, including the pre-strain and warping effects. These dual roles of defects modulate both local and global properties of the material in unexpected ways. For example, we will demonstrate that in some cases local response of 2D crystals can even be stiffened and strengthened by the presence of defects. These new findings not only shed lights on the characterization of 2D material properties, but also add a new dimension to material design, in the scenario of defect-based geometrical and topological engineering.
