Hengxing Ji is a professor in School of Chemistry and Materials Sciences at USTC. He received his B.S. degree in 2003 from the University of Science and Technology of China, and his Ph.D. degree in 2008 from the Institute of Chemistry, CAS under the supervision of Prof. Lijun Wan. Then he joined the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research-Dresden in 2008 working with Prof. Oliver G. Schmidt as a Humboldt Research Fellow before moving to the University of Texas at Austin in 2010 working with Prof. Rodney S. Ruoff as a postdoctoral researcher. He joined USTC in 2013, selected as the 100-Talent Program of CAS.
His research focuses on low dimensional carbon nanostructures, micro/nano-materials and devices for energy conversion and storage, electron/ion transport properties of nanostructures, and size-surface-interface effects of nanostructured materials.

Graphene is a sp2-hybridized carbon network with excellent electrochemical stability, electron conductivity and high specific surface are, which are of great importance for electrochemical energy storage. Electrons and ions are ‘energy carriers’ in electrochemical energy storage process, thus finely tuning their transport behavior is essential to improve the device energy density and power density. The electrode/electrolyte interface is the place where the electrochemical reaction occurs, while its structure and properties usually limit the energy storage performance far below the theoretical level. In this talk, I will introduce my recent work that focus on graphene based material to tackle the two issues above, e.g., three-dimensional graphene based material for simultaneously improved energy and power density of lithium ion battery, and the fundamental of graphene/electrolyte interface improved electrochemical energy storage.
